A common gut bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis, is twice as likely to be found in colorectal cancer patients when it carries specific viruses within its genome. Researchers discovered that two previously unidentified Caudoviricetes prophages, not the bacterium itself, distinguish the cancer-associated population.
